BIG BAD WOLVES (2013) FIVE TOP HATS

BBW2

*In this post, my thoughts on this, I do get into some plot points of the movie. I wouldn’t consider them spoilers, but if you want to go into this totally unaware of anything that goes on, well… here’s a big spoiler: I LOVED IT!!!!*

Over our time together, I know that we – as the collective that we are – like to raise our eyebrows and nod our heads and make curious remarks when one of us gives something top marks… “Five out of five, you say???” Says someone. “Ten out of ten??? IMPOSSIBLE!!!” Says someone else. “You’re out of your fucking mind, Isaacs” says everyone. Well – I give this one five TH because I absolutely LOVED IT from the opening fucking over-the-credits-sequence to the very end. I mean, sure it got a little dry and repetitive in the middle but that doesn’t take away from anything these guys did here and I LOVED it. I might even go so far as to say this might be one of my favorite movies. I also say that I know it’s really early in the year but I highly doubt I’ll watch something over the next eleven months that I’ll like as much as this. Will you like it? *shrugs* I think if we’ve been together for any amount of time you know my taste and whether or not we’ll agree. I also don’t like the screen grabs I see out there on Google so I am going to go watch this again and make my own. Don’t worry – no boobs today. BRB.

BIG BAD WOLVES 1

If you know me or read my shit – you know that I am a big sucker for looooooooong, deliberate, slow motion shots – and the beginning of this movie is about a seven minute slow motion sequence of brilliance that could possibly be my favorite opening to a movie ever. Over a beautiful score of what could possibly be considered “music box” music, we follow three kids playing hide and seek. The girls go running off through the woods and head to some dilapidated building. One girl hides in an old cabinet:

While the other:

BIG BAD WOLVES 3

Heads out to a pipe. Eventually she is found and everyone’s happy –

BIG BAD WOLVES 4

So they head to find the other girl –

BIG BAD WOLVES 5

But there’s nothing there but her shoe –

BIG BAD WOLVES 6

I found this VERY effective and even a little moving. I probably watched the opening five or six times before my rental expired. Then, in a perfect move, the filmmakers don’t give us a bunch of bullshit exposition and we find our lead suspect –

BIG BAD WOLVES 11

Getting worked over by one of the coolest cop characters / actors I’ve seen in forever –

BIG BAD WOLVES 8

They beat him with a phone-book and stomp on his nuts a little –

BIG BAD WOLVES 7

But he doesn’t crack and claims he’s innocent. Later, they receive a tip where the body of the girl can be found and, if you watch this, there’s nothing fun at the end of this trail of gummy bears (and yes – the sequence where they follow this trail is also beautiful slow-mo with a wicked score).

BIG BAD WOLVES 9

As they are checking out the crime scene, a car comes screeching up – it’s the girl’s father and he’s one pissed off MOFO –

BIG BAD WOLVES 10

What follows is some dry going through the motions action but it all leads up to a – and you know I love this in a movie – a BEAUTIFULLY WICKED slow motion montage as the three leads careen into a meeting that will not be good for anyone – here’s a couple of images:

BIG BAD WOLVES 14 BIG BAD WOLVES 13 BIG BAD WOLVES 15

After that, there’s a believable and fun three person chase through the city and then IT’S ON down in the basement of the farmhouse.

BIG BAD WOLVES 12

When I say that this is the part that gets a little dry and repetitive – this is that point. It’s also sphincter clinching, graphically brutal – so this might be where some folks could get turned off of this thing. But make no mistake – it all comes back and gets wicked fucking awesome when the grandpa gets involved. Talk about some fucking badass Hebrews!

BIG BAD WOLVES 16 BIG BAD WOLVES 17

I think that’s about as far as I’ll go with this because there’s still a good 30 minutes left after this part but – FUCK YEAH I love this movie. I’m going to watch this a LOT in my life.

      • saw it today, will have my review up tomorrow.
I enjoyed it a lot and found a number of instances where the subtitles were totally laughable, (they said something completely different) but I’m use to that.
I wouldn’t say it’s the best movie of the year, but it was done extremely well.
I detest horror, so I never ventured into trying to watch Rabies (eventhiough it has the distinction of being the first ever Israeli horror film.) Maybe i’ll get around to it one of these days.

This is an improvement over Rabies – this is a much better movie – but, I did really like Rabies. That said, maybe you should watch it sometime and tell me why it’s called Rabies since it has nothing to do with Rabies. Perhaps there’s something lost in the translation?

  1. Well, well, well…I’ve been waiting for this a long time. This movie is so good, it’s scary. I’m overly ecstatic that you loved this one as much as I thought you would. It’s an improvement over Rabies, shows the directors are heading in the right direction. Can’t wait to see what they come up with next, looks like a long, prosperous career.

  2. Oh man, during the rundown of the hide and seek opening I was kinda getting geared up for a sort of rip-off Narnia situation. But glad to see that liked this one so much.

Okay, I just finished it. I think it’s pretty good. I liked the slow motion shots here, as well. I found this to be very unpredictable and so you know that’s always a huge plus for me. I’d give this 4/5.

I thought the pacing was good and liked the way it moved the story along. I didn’t think the 2nd act dragged. Remember I liked “Hard Candy” and so I don’t mind films that spend a lot of time in one location – especially if said film can keep me guessing, as this one and “Hard Candy” did.

  4. I don’t want to know anything about this one so I didn’t even read the review, except for the beginning red shit. So yeah. Good job writing and filling up a page with a post about this movie. It’s probably a solid review, but I didn’t read it. I didn’t read it. Read it. It.

    Huff and puff, motherfucker.

I’m sold, bro. Gotta check this one out. Don’t know how I missed this flick. Anyway, finding those hidden gems is your job and you do it well, man. Gracias, Senor!
