Scott Pilgrim vs the World – Worse than Hitler?
In 1935 a woman named Leni Riefenstahl directed a film called ‘Triumph of the Will’. The movie is still considered a landmark achievement in film-making. The downside? It was a propaganda film for those epic asshats the Nazi Party.
So what does this morally disgusting yet well made piece of cinema have to do with Scott Pilgrim vs the World? I think the answer is in the question. Scott Pilgrim is technically an amazingly well made film that has a sickening plot and cast of characters.
It tells the story of Scott Pilgrim, a selfish asshole who plays in an annoying hipster band. He gets a nice girlfriend who he immediately drops for a chance with the girl of his dreams Ramona Flowers. Ramona says she’ll only date him if he defeats her seven evil exes. And that’s basically how the movie progresses.
The problem is that Scott is a dick who has an inflated sense of worth when he’s actually a pathetic loser. Which would be OK if the movie acknowledged this but director Edgar Wright wants you to think Scott is cool. He’s not cool, he’s a shallow douchebag.
Ramon isn’t much better. What kind of asshole forces someone to fight all of her exes before she’ll go out with you? But again the makers want you to feel that Ramona is worth fighting for. In reality she’s a dull, mopey bitch who’s only noticeable trait is changing hair colour sometimes. She’s a teenage hipster fantasy woman which automatically renders her a colossal wanker.
But what tops off this feces cake with a sprinkling of pure uncut shit is the ending. Does Scott realise that he’s defeated his own self-doubt and drop Ramona like a overdue dump? Or does he realise that any girl that makes such sad demands of you isn’t worth it and gets back with the girl that actually likes him? Neither. He ends up with the boring cow and they walk off accompanied by some gag inducing indie rock soundtrack.
SPvsTW is an extremely well made, ethically repugnant film made even worse by shitty pop culture references and characters so shallow that even Scott’s presumably tiny penis could touch the bottom. The message of the story is – boys, use girls out of boredom until you find someone you think is cool for no apparent reason. Girls, you should force potential partners into fights as part of a self obsessed power trip.
A truly shitty film. Both Scott Pilgrim and the aforementioned Triumph of the Will are movies about total fucking tools, but at least Hitler had the decency to realise this and blow his own brains out. So to answer the question in the title – Yes Scott is worse than Hitler. The prosecution rests your honour.
